Why you’ll love it

Agapanthus africanus is pure summer structure — upright stems topped with rounded flower heads in rich blue tones, floating above neat, strap-like foliage. It has that effortless “holiday garden” feel, but it’s also brilliantly practical: strong shape, long flowering, and a real lift for sunny borders when everything else is getting a bit tired.
It’s especially beautiful repeated in groups, or used as a punctuation plant through grasses, salvias and lavender. And in a pot? It becomes a statement without needing constant attention.

Caragh Garden Notebook (our growing tips)

Agapanthus thrives with sun and sharp drainage. Choose a warm spot and make sure the soil doesn’t stay wet over winter — that’s the one thing it truly dislikes. If you’re planting into heavier ground, work in grit to open it up and plant slightly proud of the surrounding soil level.
In containers, use a large pot with drainage holes and a free-draining compost mix. Water well during active growth, then reduce watering as autumn arrives. A mulch in late autumn helps protect the crown in colder or exposed gardens, and pots can be moved into a sheltered corner for winter.
