Description
Agapanthus ‘Black Magic’ is a dramatic, elegant variety with deep blue flower heads that open from darker buds, creating a rich, almost inky look in the summer border. It has the same clean, upright habit that makes agapanthus so useful, but with a darker, more striking flower colour. It works especially well where you want a bold focal point without needing a plant that’s overly fussy.

Planting:
Plant in spring into well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position. Agapanthus prefers free drainage and flowers best when slightly pot-bound, so don’t give it too much space. In containers, use a gritty compost and ensure good drainage holes.
Watering:
Water regularly while the plant establishes. Once settled, it is fairly drought-tolerant in the ground, but it will flower better with steady moisture in summer. Container plants will need more regular watering.
Feeding:
Feed in spring and again in early summer with a balanced fertiliser to support flowering. Potted plants benefit from regular feeding through the growing season.
Seasonal Care & Tidy-Up:
Remove spent flower stems once flowering has finished. Leave the leaves in place until they die back naturally, as they help feed the plant. In colder areas, a winter mulch can help protect the crown.
Division (to keep plants vigorous):
Divide only when clumps are overcrowded. Agapanthus usually performs best when left undisturbed for a few years.
Pests & Problems:
Generally trouble-free. Poor drainage is the biggest issue, especially in winter. Slugs can nibble new growth in spring, but are rarely a major problem.
Design Notes:
A strong choice for sunny borders and containers where a dark flower colour will stand out. Pairs well with silver foliage, pale blues, whites, and grasses. It brings a more dramatic feel than the lighter agapanthus forms while staying clean and easy to manage.
