Description
Panicum virgatum ‘Blue Fountain’ is a deciduous perennial grass that produces structurally rigid clumps upright powder-blue foliage, which later forms masses of hazy tanned-coloured flowers in early autumn, followed by gorgeous yellow autumn colour. It is a fantastic addition to flower beds, rockeries, pots, and prairie-style plantings. It grows well in most soil types, even drier conditions (once established), but will show up best in full sun to dappled shade. Its yellow foliage can be left over winter for interest, while its seed heads will attract birds and other wildlife. In spring, the old foliage can be cut down to 2-3 inches, so the new growth can emerge fresh from March/April onwards. It can grow to a height of 1.5-2m, and sometimes slightly more.
