Description

For proper summer drama, Delphinium ‘Black Knight’ is hard to beat. Tall, commanding spires are packed with rich, velvety deep-purple blooms (almost ink-dark), each one set off with a dark “bee” at the centre. It brings instant height and theatre to the back of a border—especially when planted through softer colours, where it creates that gorgeous, moody contrast that makes everything else look brighter.
A true cottage-garden classic, and a favourite for cutting too.

Why we love it

Big, bold height
Those tall spires add structure and a “garden designer” feel—perfect for creating layers.
A colour with real depth
‘Black Knight’ gives you that luxurious, dark purple that looks stunning with creams, blush pinks, silvers and fresh greens.
Brilliant for bouquets
Cut stems bring instant drama indoors—pair with roses or white flowers for a really striking arrangement.

How to plant & care (Caragh Garden Notebook)

  • Planting: Choose a sunny spot with rich soil. Mix in compost and plant at the same depth as the pot.
  • Watering: Keep watered while establishing; don’t let it dry out in hot spells.
  • Feeding: Feed in spring and again as buds form to support strong stems and heavy flowering.
  • Support: Stake early (before stems get top-heavy). Ring supports or discreet canes work well.
  • After flowering: Cut back the spent flower spike to encourage a second flush later in the season.

Styling tip

For a classic look, plant ‘Black Knight’ behind pale roses, foxgloves, nepeta, or Alchemilla mollis. For something more modern, pair it with ornamental grasses and white alliums.
