Description
Like a painter’s palette brought to life in your garden, Euphorbia ‘Ascott Rainbow’ transforms ordinary spaces into extraordinary displays of colour and texture. This remarkable spurge brings year-round interest to Irish gardens with its stunning variegated foliage that shifts through seasons like a living kaleidoscope, perfectly suited to our changeable climate.
The architectural rosettes of lance-shaped leaves create a magnificent tapestry of green, cream, and soft pink margins that intensify in cooler weather, whilst the distinctive yellow-green flower bracts emerge in spring like tiny lanterns celebrating the season’s arrival. This robust beauty forms an elegant dome-shaped clump that provides structure and colour when many other plants are dormant.
Named after the famous Ascott House gardens, this cultivar represents the finest in British plant breeding, combining the resilience of its Mediterranean heritage with adaptability to Irish conditions. The plant’s drought tolerance and ability to thrive in challenging spots makes it invaluable for modern gardens, whilst its evergreen nature ensures your borders never look bare.
Perfect as a specimen plant in gravel gardens or mixed borders, ‘Ascott Rainbow’ pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, lavender, and other Mediterranean-style plants. Its architectural form makes it ideal for contemporary Irish garden designs, bringing structure and year-round colour to coastal and inland gardens alike.
Caragh Garden Notebook
Plant in well-drained soil with good drainage being essential – add grit or sharp sand to heavy clay soils. Space plants 60-80cm apart to allow for mature spread. Excellent for container growing using a gritty, free-draining compost mix.
Thrives in pH 6.0-8.0 and tolerates alkaline conditions well. Water regularly during first growing season to establish, then very drought tolerant. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring.
Deadhead spent flower stems in late spring to maintain tidy appearance and encourage fresh foliage growth. Cut back any damaged or old stems in early spring before new growth begins. Wear gloves when handling as the milky sap can cause skin irritation.
Divide established clumps every 4-5 years in spring by carefully separating rooted sections. Take stem cuttings in late spring, allowing cut ends to callus for 24 hours before potting in gritty compost.
