Description
Standard topsoil is the practical, no-frills option for projects that need volume. It’s a natural, unscreened soil that may contain small stones, organic matter, and minor debris which is exactly what makes it cost-effective for larger jobs where a fine finish isn’t the priority.
Use it to raise ground levels, fill hollows, build up banks, or bulk out planting areas before topping with a finer growing medium. It’s the workhorse product at the start of a landscaping project, the material that gets the ground to the right level before anything more precise goes in.
If you’re working on a large-scale project and need significant quantities of soil at a fair price, standard topsoil does the job.
Caragh Garden Notebook
Standard topsoil is ideal as a base layer — follow with screened topsoil or a compost-enriched growing medium for borders and beds where you want plants to establish well. For areas being used purely for filling or levelling with no planting, it can be used as a standalone material. Allow freshly placed topsoil to settle and water in before any further work. If you’re unsure whether standard or screened topsoil is right for your project, the rule of thumb is simple if plants are going in, go screened.
