Description

Graceful, airy and wonderfully easy to place, Verbena bonariensis brings height, movement and a light touch of colour to the summer garden. Its tall, slender stems are topped with clusters of soft violet-purple flowers that seem to hover above the border, weaving beautifully through surrounding plants without ever feeling bulky.
Loved for its long flowering season and pollinator-friendly nature, this is a brilliant perennial for adding softness and rhythm to sunny planting schemes. It works especially well in relaxed, naturalistic borders where you want the garden to feel full, light and alive.
Why we love it
Verbena bonariensis gives you height without heaviness. It lifts a planting scheme, attracts bees and butterflies, and has that lovely transparent quality that allows it to sit comfortably among roses, grasses and other summer perennials.
Appearance
This upright herbaceous perennial has tall, wiry stems with small clusters of violet-purple flowers held high above the foliage. Its open, airy habit means it can be planted through the middle of a border without blocking neighbouring plants, making it especially useful in layered schemes.
Best for
  • Sunny mixed borders
  • Pollinator-friendly gardens
  • Prairie-style and naturalistic planting
  • Adding height and movement
  • Softening more structured planting schemes
Position
Best planted in full sun.
Soil
It prefers well-drained soil and performs best where it will not sit wet in winter.
Growth habit
Verbena bonariensis is a tall, airy herbaceous perennial with a light, see-through structure and a long flowering season.
Seasonal interest
  • Summer to autumn: clusters of violet-purple flowers
  • Autumn: attractive seedheads

  • Spring: fresh new basal growth emerges

Caragh’s Garden Notebook

A wonderful plant for movement
It helps a border feel softer, looser and more natural without taking up too much visual space.
Excellent for pollinators
A favourite with bees and butterflies through the warmer months.
Lovely planted in groups
Repeat it through a border for a more natural, flowing effect.
Good to know
It may self-seed gently in the right spot, often in a way that feels very natural and welcome.
