Description

Bright, glossy and wonderfully reliable, Photinia ‘Carré Rouge’ is a compact evergreen that gives you that fresh “new growth” colour again and again. The young leaves emerge a vivid red, then deepen and mature to a rich, glossy green — so the plant always feels lively, even in winter.
It’s a brilliant choice for a smart, modern hedge or screen, and it also works beautifully as a specimen in a border or a large pot. With regular clipping, it thickens up nicely and rewards you with more of that striking red flush.
Quick Facts
Botanical Name: Photinia ‘Carré Rouge’
Common Name: Photinia ‘Carré Rouge’ / Red Tip Photinia
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub / hedging plant
Foliage: New growth bright red; matures to glossy green
Form: Compact, bushy habit; clips well
Position: Sun to partial shade (best red colour in sun)
Soil: Most garden soils; prefers well-drained ground
Hardiness: Hardy in Irish/UK gardens; shelter from cold, drying winds if very exposed
Best For: Evergreen hedging, screening, colour contrast, contemporary planting, large pots
Maintenance: Moderate; trims well and flushes red after pruning
How to Plant (as a Hedge)
Prepare the ground well and improve with organic matter if needed. Plant in a straight line, firm in, and water thoroughly. Keep watering regularly through the first growing season to help it establish and thicken up.
Care Guide
Trim once or twice a year to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. A prune in late spring/early summer will often trigger a fresh flush of red leaves. Mulch in spring to support moisture and healthy growth.
Caragh Garden Notebook
If you want the richest red, give it plenty of light and don’t be afraid of a gentle trim — photinia rewards you with colour after pruning. For a really polished look, pair it with dark evergreens or ornamental grasses so that red new growth pops.
