Description
Liriope muscari ‘Royal Purple’ is a neat, dependable evergreen perennial that brings colour at the end of summer when plenty of other plants are fading. The deep purple flower spikes sit above a tidy mound of dark green foliage, giving it a smart but relaxed look that works well in borders and pots. It’s especially useful in places where you want structure, colour, and low maintenance all in one plant.

Planting:
Plant in spring or autumn into well-drained soil or a quality potting mix for containers. Space plants around 30–40cm apart so they can spread into a good clump over time. Water well after planting.
Watering:
Water regularly in the first season. Once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant in the ground, though it looks best with consistent moisture, especially in sunnier positions. Pot-grown plants will need more regular watering.
Feeding:
A light mulch of compost in spring is usually enough in the ground. In pots, apply a slow-release feed in spring to support healthy growth and flowering.
Seasonal Care & Tidy-Up:
In late winter or early spring, comb out or trim away any tired foliage before new growth starts. The old leaves are best left in place through winter for protection and structure.
Division (to keep plants vigorous):
Divide every few years in spring if clumps become crowded. It’s an easy way to refresh the plant and make more stock.
Pests & Problems:
Usually trouble-free. In very wet, heavy soils, drainage is the main concern. Otherwise it’s a tough, low-maintenance plant.
Design Notes:
A strong choice for edging, underplanting, and containers. The purple flower spikes are particularly effective alongside grasses, ferns, heucheras, and other shade or part-shade plants. It gives a tidy, repeatable rhythm through a border and stays looking good for a long season.
