Description
Like a graceful swan gliding across a moonlit pond, Euphorbia ‘Silver Swan’ brings an ethereal elegance to Irish gardens with its distinctive silver-edged foliage and luminous lime-green flowers. This enchanting perennial creates a shimmering tapestry of colour that dances beautifully in our gentle Irish breezes, offering months of reliable performance from late spring through autumn.
The plant forms neat, compact mounds of blue-green leaves, each one delicately rimmed with creamy-white margins that catch the light like morning frost. Throughout the growing season, clusters of bright lime-green bracts emerge, creating a striking contrast against the variegated foliage and adding a fresh, contemporary feel to any planting scheme.
This hardy spurge thrives in Ireland’s temperate climate, proving remarkably drought-tolerant once established whilst remaining unfazed by our occasional summer showers. ‘Silver Swan’ is particularly valued for its architectural form and long flowering period, making it an excellent choice for modern garden designs, gravel gardens, or as a structural element in mixed borders.
Perfect companions include ornamental grasses like Stipa tenuissima, purple-leaved Heuchera, or the silvery foliage of Artemisia. Its compact habit makes it ideal for container growing, whilst in the garden it creates stunning drifts when planted in groups of three or five, bringing year-round interest to Irish gardens with its exceptional foliage and reliable flowering.
Caragh Garden Notebook
Plant in spring after the last frost, spacing 30-40cm apart in well-drained soil. Silver Swan tolerates a wide range of soil types but performs best in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions (pH 6.5-7.5). Excellent for container growing – use a soil-based compost with added grit for drainage.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots, then reduce watering as the plant becomes drought-tolerant. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming, though the seed heads can be left for winter interest.
Cut back to ground level in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Wear gloves when handling as the milky sap can cause skin irritation. Divide clumps every 3-4 years in spring to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.
