Description

The Diamond Lattice Trellis is one of those pieces that does the quiet work of making a garden look intentional. It’s not trying to shout—it just adds structure, supports climbers beautifully, and creates those clean, defined lines that pull a space together.
The diamond lattice pattern is classic for good reason: it’s open enough to let light through and give plants room to weave, but tight enough (40mm apertures) to offer real support and visual interest even before anything’s growing on it. The frame is planed smooth and substantial—this isn’t flimsy garden centre trellis that warps after one winter.
Available in six heights from 30cm to 180cm, it works just as well as a low border edge, a mid-height screen between borders, or a tall backdrop for roses and clematis. Fix it to the top of a fence panel for extra privacy without the weight of a full 6ft panel, or use it freestanding (with posts) to section off different garden areas while keeping sightlines open.
The pressure-treated timber means it’s built to last outdoors, and the natural finish takes paint or stain beautifully if you want to match it to your scheme. Left natural, it weathers to a soft silver-grey that sits quietly behind planting.

Choosing the Right Height
  • 30cm, 45cm & 60cm: Perfect for low borders, raised bed edging, or topping fence panels or dwarf walls. Adds decorative detail without blocking views.
  • 120cm: Ideal for mid-height screening, dividing borders, or supporting shorter climbers like compact roses and sweet peas.
  • 180cm: Best for tall backdrops, privacy screening (especially when fixed to existing fencing), or training vigorous climbers like clematis, honeysuckle, and climbing hydrangea.
Installation Tips
Fixing to Existing Fencing:
Attach panels to the top of fence panels using galvanised screws or brackets. Pre-drill holes to prevent splitting. This is a brilliant way to add height and airiness without the solid mass of a taller fence.
Freestanding Installation:
Use treated timber posts (75mm × 75mm minimum) set in concrete or post spikes. Space posts at 183cm intervals to match panel width. Fix panels to posts with galvanised screws and galvanised ‘U’ brackets, checking level as you go.
Wall-Mounting:
Use timber battens to create a 2–3cm gap between trellis and wall—this allows air circulation behind climbers and prevents rot. Fix battens to the wall first, then attach trellis to battens.
Finishing & Maintenance
Treating the Timber:
Pressure-treated timber is ready to use, but you can enhance longevity and appearance:
  • Apply a timber preservative or decking oil annually to maintain colour and protection
  • Paint or stain with exterior-grade products once timber has weathered for 6–12 months (allows treatment chemicals to settle)
  • Choose lighter colours to reflect heat and reduce warping in full sun
Longevity:
With proper installation and occasional treatment, expect many years of solid service. Check fixings annually and tighten if needed—timber naturally expands and contracts with weather.

Planting & Training Climbers

Best Climbers for Diamond Trellis:
  • Clematis: Weaves beautifully through 40mm apertures; varieties like ‘Jackmanii’ and ‘Nelly Moser’ are reliable and showy
  • Climbing & Rambling Roses: Need tying in initially, then self-support; try ‘Compassion’ or ‘Rosea’
  • Honeysuckle (Lonicera): Fast-growing, fragrant, excellent for quick coverage
  • Jasmine (Jasminum): Star jasmine for scent; winter jasmine for year-round interest
  • Annual Climbers: Sweet peas, morning glory, and nasturtiums for seasonal colour
Training Tips:
  • Tie in young growth loosely with soft garden twine—avoid tight ties that cut into stems
  • Guide stems horizontally as well as vertically for better coverage and more flowers
  • Prune climbers according to their type (some flower on old wood, others on new growth)

Design Ideas

Layered Privacy:
Fix 120cm panels to the top of existing 90cm fencing for a 210cm boundary that feels lighter and more decorative than solid panels.
Garden Rooms:
Use freestanding trellis panels to create “walls” between different garden zones—dining area, vegetable patch, cutting garden—without losing light or making spaces feel boxed in.
Vertical Interest in Small Gardens:
Mount taller panels (180cm) against walls or fences as a backdrop for narrow borders. Train climbers up for maximum planting in minimal ground space.
Decorative Screening:
Hide bins, compost heaps, or utility areas with shorter panels (120cm) planted with fast-growing climbers. Functional, but far better-looking than solid screening.
Architectural Features:
Use unpainted trellis as a design element in its own right—the diamond pattern casts beautiful shadows and adds texture even without planting.
