Description

Clematis Raymond Evison ‘Tranquilité’ is a beautifully calming clematis—large, elegant flowers in soft, restful tones that feel like a deep breath in the garden. It’s the perfect climber when you want something romantic and refined rather than loud: a gentle wash of colour that sits beautifully against stone, timber, or dark evergreen foliage.
Trained up a trellis, arch, obelisk or pergola, it brings height and flower power without taking up much ground space. The blooms are generous and showy, and with good care you’ll often get a second flush later in the season too—so it earns its keep well beyond that first spring moment.
Like all clematis, it’s happiest with its head in the sun and its feet in the shade: give it light for flowering, and cool, moist roots for steady growth.

Caragh Garden Notebook

Planting:
Plant in spring or autumn. Choose a spot in sun or part shade with a support in place (trellis, wires, obelisk). Dig a generous hole and enrich with compost. Plant the clematis a little deeper than it sits in the pot (around 5–8cm deeper) to encourage strong shoots from the base. Water well and mulch to keep roots cool.
Soil Preparation:
Clematis love fertile, moisture-retentive but free-draining soil. Improve heavy soil with compost and grit; improve light soil with plenty of organic matter. Mulch annually.
Watering & Feeding:
Water regularly in the first year and during dry spells. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser, then again after the first flush to support repeat flowering.
Pruning:

Late winter / early spring (Feb–March in Ireland)

  • Don’t cut it to the ground.
  • Remove any dead, weak, or damaged stems.
  • Then shorten remaining stems lightly, cutting back to a pair of strong, healthy buds.
  • If it’s young or you want it bushier from the base, you can prune a little harder in year 1–2 (still not to ground): cut stems back to 30–60cm to encourage branching.
Pests & Problems:
Watch for slugs/snails on young shoots. Good watering and planting slightly deeper helps reduce the risk of clematis wilt. Keep the base shaded and avoid letting it dry out.
Design Notes:
Perfect for trellis panels, arches, pergolas, and climbing through shrubs/roses. The soft colouring pairs beautifully with white roses, pale pinks, lavender, and silvery foliage. Lovely near seating where the colour feels restful.
