Why you’ll love it
If you want height without width, Cupressus arizonica ‘Fastigiata’ is a brilliant solution. It grows in a naturally slim, upright shape, giving you that clean, architectural line that works beautifully in contemporary gardens — but it’s equally useful in more traditional spaces where you need discreet screening or a strong evergreen backbone.
The foliage has a soft, blue-green tone that lifts the planting around it, especially in winter when you’re craving a bit of colour and structure.
Caragh Garden Notebook (our growing tips)
Plant in full sun for the best colour and strongest growth, and prioritise drainage — like many cypresses, it dislikes sitting wet in winter. Water well in the first growing season to help it establish, then it becomes much more tolerant of dry spells.
If you’re using it for screening, a light trim once a year will keep the outline crisp (it often looks best with minimal pruning, letting the natural column shape do the work). In pots, choose a large container and keep watering consistent through summer.
