For true “wow” autumn colour, Liquidambar is hard to beat. Its star-shaped leaves can move through yellow, orange, crimson and deep burgundy as the temperatures drop.

2. Parrotia persica (Persian Ironwood)

Parrotia is one of those quietly brilliant trees that gives and gives: rich autumn tones (often amber, apricot and red too), elegant branching, and beautiful bark as it matures. We have one at the entrance gate of the nursery.

Why we love it: Multi-season interest and a sophisticated, natural look that is unstintingly generous.

3. Acer × freemanii ‘Autumn Blaze’

‘Autumn Blaze’ is a classic choice for bold, dependable autumn colour. It’s the sort of tree that makes the whole garden feel warmer as the days shorten.

Why we love it: It’s in the name: strong red-orange colour and great impact as a feature tree.

4. Acer campestre (Field Maple)

Field Maple is a brilliant all-rounder: a native-feeling tree with soft, golden autumn colour and a naturally tidy habit. It quietly exudes autumn’s warmth, like a hug.

5. Acer campestre ‘Elsrijk’
