Description
Thuja occidentalis ‘Yellow Ribbon’ is one of the most useful evergreens available — a narrow, upright column of bright golden-yellow foliage that brings light, structure, and year-round presence to the garden without demanding the space a broader conifer requires. The colour is the thing that sets it apart: fresh, vivid gold on the new growth in spring, settling to a warm, soft yellow-green through summer and holding that colour reliably through the colder months when the garden needs it most.

Unlike many golden conifers, ‘Yellow Ribbon’ keeps its colour well without scorching in sun or fading in shade, and its naturally tight, columnar habit means it holds its shape cleanly without any clipping. It is the kind of plant that works hard in the background — providing vertical accent, evergreen structure, and a warm colour note that lifts everything around it — while asking very little in return.

Planting:
Plant in autumn or early spring into moist, well-drained soil. ‘Yellow Ribbon’ is tolerant of most reasonable garden soils including heavier clay, provided drainage is reasonable and waterlogging is avoided. A position in full sun gives the brightest, most sustained golden colouring; partial shade is tolerated but the yellow will soften to a more muted yellow-green in shadier conditions. The narrow, upright habit makes it particularly well suited to positions where lateral space is limited — beside pathways, in narrow borders, or as a vertical accent in a confined spot. Water in thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base with composted bark to retain moisture and suppress competition.

Watering:
Water consistently through the first two growing seasons while the root system establishes. Once settled, ‘Yellow Ribbon’ is reasonably self-sufficient and tolerant of drier conditions, though it performs best with reliable moisture through the growing season. In prolonged dry spells, a thorough watering will maintain the freshness and vibrancy of the golden foliage. Avoid waterlogged conditions — good drainage is as important as consistent moisture.

Feeding:
A balanced slow-release fertiliser applied in spring for the first few years supports establishment and encourages strong, healthy growth. Once established, an annual mulch of composted bark around the base in spring is usually sufficient. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which push soft, lush growth at the expense of the dense, columnar form and can dilute the intensity of the golden colouring.

Pruning:
‘Yellow Ribbon’ requires no pruning to maintain its naturally neat, columnar habit — one of its greatest assets. If any shaping is desired, a light trim in late summer is the best moment, using sharp shears and avoiding cutting into old wood. Remove any reverted green shoots immediately if they appear, as these can be more vigorous than the golden growth and will eventually dominate if left unchecked.

Pests & Problems:
Generally very trouble-free. Scale insects and conifer aphids can occasionally appear — monitor in spring and treat with a horticultural oil or suitable insecticide if needed. Thuja can be susceptible to Coryneum canker, which causes individual branches to die back; if noticed, remove affected growth well into healthy wood and sterilise tools between cuts. Good drainage and healthy establishment are the most reliable preventatives for most conifer problems.

Design Notes:
The narrow, upright habit of ‘Yellow Ribbon’ makes it one of the most versatile structural conifers available — it provides genuine vertical presence without the width that a broader conifer demands, which makes it invaluable in smaller gardens, narrow borders, and formal planting schemes. Use a matched pair either side of an entrance or doorway for instant, formal symmetry; repeat along a boundary or driveway for a calm, rhythmic structure; or use a single specimen as a vertical accent among softer, more naturalistic planting. The golden colour reads beautifully against darker evergreens, purple foliage, and blue conifers — plant alongside Thuja plicata ‘Atrovirens’ or a dark yew for a contrast of colour within a single form, or combine with purple-leaved shrubs for a warm-cool contrast that is effective through every season. Particularly useful for bringing light and warmth into a winter garden — position it where the low winter sun can catch the gold and it earns its place all over again.
