Description

Named for one of the most beloved storytellers who ever lived, Roald Dahl the rose carries something of its namesake’s spirit — warm, generous, quietly mischievous, and impossible not to love. The blooms are loosely cupped rosettes in the most beautiful warm apricot-peach, a colour that shifts and softens as each flower opens, moving from a deeper, richer centre outward to something altogether more delicate at the edges. It is a colour that glows in evening light in a way that few roses manage.

What makes Roald Dahl truly special, beyond the charm of its blooms, is its extraordinary generosity. This rose flowers freely, reliably, and repeatedly — from early summer well into autumn — with a disease resistance that makes it one of the most straightforward David Austin roses to grow. Where some English roses demand patience and expertise, Roald Dahl simply gets on with it, producing flush after flush of warm, peachy blooms without complaint.

A rose that performs as beautifully in a mixed border as it does in a container. A rose that beginners can trust and experienced growers will love.

Planting: Plant in a sunny, open position with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Roald Dahl is accommodating of a range of soil types — prepare the planting hole with plenty of well-rotted compost and a handful of specialist rose fertiliser or bone meal. In containers, use a quality loam-based compost in a deep, well-draining pot and feed regularly through the growing season.

Soil: Performs well across a range of soil types, including heavier clay soils with improved drainage. In lighter, sandy soils, mulch generously to retain moisture and add fertility.

Watering: Water consistently through the growing season — particularly during dry spells and in the establishment year. Always water at the base of the plant rather than overhead, which reduces the risk of fungal disease. A thorough, deep watering two to three times a week is preferable to frequent light watering.

Feeding: Apply a specialist rose fertiliser in early spring as growth resumes, and again after each flush of flowers to fuel the next. Roald Dahl’s exceptional repeat flowering capacity rewards consistent feeding — don’t skip the midsummer application. Mulch with well-rotted compost in late winter to nourish the soil and protect the root zone.

Pruning: Prune in late winter, removing dead, weak, and crossing stems and reducing the plant by approximately one third. Deadhead spent blooms throughout the season — Roald Dahl responds particularly well to regular deadheading, producing successive flushes of flowers right through to the first frosts. A light midsummer tidy encourages the strongest second bloom.

Disease Resistance: Among the finest disease-resistant roses David Austin produces — a genuinely significant quality in the Irish and UK climate where black spot and mildew can challenge less robust varieties. Roald Dahl’s natural resistance means less intervention, less spraying, and more enjoyment.

Beginner Friendly: If you are growing a David Austin rose for the first time, Roald Dahl is one of the most forgiving and rewarding varieties to start with. Its vigour, disease resistance, and free-flowering nature mean it gives generously even when conditions are less than perfect.

Styling Notes: The warm apricot-peach of Roald Dahl’s blooms places it naturally alongside soft yellows, burnt oranges, and creamy whites — as well as the deeper burgundy and plum tones that make it pop by contrast. Pair with Salvia ‘Caradonna’, Achillea in warm yellow, and bronze-leaved Heuchera for a border with real warmth and depth. In containers, it is stunning underplanted with trailing Calibrachoa in complementary peach and amber tones. For a David Austin trio, plant alongside Gentle Hermione and The Ancient Mariner for a border that moves from the softest blush through warm peach — a colour story told entirely in roses.
