Why you’ll love it
Dryopteris affinis ‘Brilliance’ is a fern with a little bit of theatre. In spring, new fronds unfurl in glowing tones of copper and gold, lighting up shady areas in a way that feels almost unexpected — then they mature to a rich, steady green that holds the garden together for the rest of the year.
It’s perfect for bringing warmth and texture to woodland-style planting, and it looks gorgeous alongside hellebores, hostas, epimediums and spring bulbs.
Caragh Garden Notebook (our growing tips)
For the best colour and strongest growth, plant in dappled shade with moist, humus-rich soil. Improve the ground with leaf mould or well-rotted compost, and keep it evenly moist during dry spells (especially in its first season).
In late winter/early spring, simply remove any tired fronds to make way for the fresh new growth. Avoid very dry, exposed spots — this fern prefers consistent moisture and shelter, without sitting in water.
