Description
True to its name meaning “ever upward,” Rhododendron ‘Excelsior’ reaches new heights of garden excellence with its magnificent deep pink blooms that seem to embody the very spirit of triumph and achievement. This distinguished evergreen shrub creates spectacular focal points in Irish gardens, its richly coloured flowers emerging in generous clusters that combine deep rose-pink petals with pristine white throats and delicate darker spotting for a display of unparalleled sophistication.
Each stunning bloom unfolds to reveal layers of deep pink petals that frame a luminous white centre, creating a beautiful contrast that draws the eye and captures the heart. The delicate dark spotting adds depth and character to each flower, whilst the substantial size of the blooms creates an impressive display that commands attention from across the garden. The colour combination shifts beautifully in changing light, appearing almost jewel-like in morning dew and warming to rich rose tones in afternoon sunshine.
This robust variety maintains an elegant, upright habit with glossy dark green foliage that provides year-round architectural presence and creates the perfect backdrop for the spectacular late spring flowering display. The vigorous growth and reliable performance make it ideal for creating impressive garden statements in both formal and naturalistic settings.
Hardy and dependable in our changeable climate, ‘Excelsior’ thrives in woodland garden settings or sheltered borders where morning light enhances the beautiful colour contrasts. Plant alongside white-flowering camellias and cream-flowering pieris to emphasize the white throat markings, or combine with purple heathers and golden-leaved hostas for a sophisticated mixed border that celebrates the triumph of exceptional garden design.
Caragh’s Garden Notebook
Plant in autumn or early spring in well-prepared, acidic soil enriched with ericaceous compost and plenty of organic matter. Choose a sheltered position with dappled shade and protection from strong winds to preserve the delicate flower markings. Space 1.5-2m apart to allow for vigorous growth and good air circulation.
Maintain soil acidity with annual mulching using pine needles, bark chips, or composted leaves. The ideal pH range is 4.5-6.0. Ensure consistent moisture throughout the growing season, particularly during dry spells, but avoid waterlogged conditions which can damage the root system.
For container cultivation, use ericaceous compost in a substantial pot at least 45cm wide with excellent drainage. This vigorous variety benefits from regular feeding and makes an outstanding specimen plant for larger patios. Feed with rhododendron fertiliser in early spring and again after flowering.
Deadhead spent blooms promptly to encourage vigorous growth and maintain the plant’s energy for next year’s spectacular display. Light pruning immediately after flowering helps maintain shape and removes any weak or crossing branches, encouraging the upright growth habit.
Water deeply at the base of the plant during dry periods, avoiding overhead watering which can mark the beautiful bi-coloured blooms. The developing root system benefits from consistent moisture and protection from temperature extremes through organic mulching.
