Description
Experience the breathtaking beauty of Vinca major ‘Maculata’, one of the most spectacular and vibrantly variegated evergreen ground covers for gardens, where striking glossy leaves with bright creamy-yellow to golden-yellow centres, cheerful violet-blue flowers, and vigorous trailing habit combine to create stunning displays of year-round colour and exceptional ground cover that bring months of luminous variegated foliage and reliable weed suppression with remarkable brightness making this perfect for adding bold variegated ground cover, shade garden colour, and vigorous spreading presence to difficult areas, banks, and woodland gardens where fast coverage and year-round interest are essential. This exceptional cultivar offers remarkable qualities—striking glossy dark green leaves with bright creamy-yellow to golden-yellow centres creating one of the most luminous and eye-catching variegations of any ground cover, cheerful violet-blue flowers providing spring colour, vigorous trailing stems creating fast-spreading ground cover and excellent weed suppression, year-round evergreen presence providing constant colour and structure, and outstanding adaptability thriving in shade to sun throughout UK and Ireland with remarkable vigour, making this one of the most rewarding and versatile choices for adding bold variegated ground cover, bright shade garden colour, and fast-spreading coverage to challenging areas.
Throughout the seasons, this captivating ground cover displays spectacular year-round interest—the foliage is the primary ornamental feature providing constant presence in all seasons. The leaves are oval to heart-shaped, measuring 4-8cm long and 3-5cm wide with smooth edges creating substantial presence for a ground cover. The leaf texture is glossy and slightly leathery creating lustrous appearance. The leaf colour is the cultivar’s most spectacular feature—each leaf has dark green margins with bright creamy-yellow to golden-yellow centre creating bold striking variegation. The yellow central splash is large and irregular, typically covering 40-60% of each leaf creating dramatic contrast against the dark green edges. The variegation is consistent and stable—every leaf displays the striking pattern. The yellow colour is particularly bright and luminous—significantly brighter than many variegated plants, creating glowing effect in shade. In spring, the new growth emerges with particularly bright golden-yellow centres creating fresh vibrant displays. The foliage is evergreen, providing year-round colour and presence—in winter, the colours remain vibrant (may intensify slightly in cold weather). The overall foliage effect is luminous, bright, and exceptionally eye-catching—like having golden spotlights illuminating shaded areas! In spring to early summer (April-June), the plant produces cheerful flowers—the flowers are funnel-shaped with five spreading petal lobes creating classic periwinkle form, measuring 3-4cm across. The flower colour is violet-blue to lavender-blue creating cheerful displays against the variegated foliage. The flowers are produced singly on short stalks arising from leaf axils along trailing stems. Flowering is profuse in spring with sporadic flowers continuing through summer. The flowers provide pleasant seasonal interest, though the variegated foliage is the primary ornamental feature. The growth habit is vigorous, trailing, and mat-forming—long flexible stems trail along ground, rooting at nodes (leaf joints) where they touch soil, creating dense spreading carpet. Stems can grow 1-2m+ long, spreading indefinitely if unchecked. The plant typically reaches only 20-30cm tall but spreads vigorously to cover large areas. Growth is fast and vigorous—can spread 50-100cm+ annually once established, making this excellent for fast ground cover but requiring containment in smaller gardens. The overall effect is bright, vigorous, and exceptionally colourful—like having luminous golden-variegated carpet with cheerful blue flowers creating year-round displays with fast-spreading coverage and excellent weed suppression.
Native to southern Europe and North Africa where Vinca major (greater periwinkle) grows wild in woodlands, hedgerows, and shaded areas, this species has been cultivated in gardens for centuries and naturalized widely. The genus name Vinca comes from the Latin ‘vincire’ (to bind), referring to the plant’s use in making wreaths or its binding, trailing stems. The species name ‘major’ means “larger,” distinguishing it from the smaller Vinca minor. ‘Maculata’ (also sold as ‘Variegata’) is a cultivar specifically selected for exceptional bright creamy-yellow to golden-yellow leaf centres creating striking bold variegation (one of the brightest variegated ground covers), vigorous growth creating fast coverage, and reliable garden performance. This represents one of the finest variegated vincas—the yellow variegation is particularly bright and stable.

Planting: Space plants 45-60cm apart for ground cover—they will spread quickly to fill gaps. For faster coverage of large areas, space 30-40cm apart. Plant container-grown specimens year-round, though spring (March-May) or autumn (September-October) is ideal for best establishment. Choose position in partial shade to full shade—this is excellent ground cover for shade! The bright variegation is particularly effective in shade where it illuminates dark areas. Tolerates full sun in cooler areas with consistent moisture, though foliage may scorch in hot sun and dry conditions. Thrives under trees, on north-facing borders, and in woodland gardens. IMPORTANT: Consider the vigorous spreading habit before planting—this is fast-growing ground cover ideal for large areas, banks, and difficult sites, but can become invasive in small gardens or mixed borders. Plant only where vigorous spread is desired, or install barriers (edging, paving, root barriers) to contain spread. Not suitable for small confined spaces or near less vigorous plants that could be overwhelmed. Dig planting hole same depth as root ball and slightly wider. Tolerates wide range of soils. Plant at same depth as in container. Backfill, firm gently, and water thoroughly. Apply light mulch if desired, though established plants create their own dense weed-suppressing mulch. Water regularly during first growing season. Position where the bright variegation can illuminate shaded areas and the vigorous growth can cover large spaces without overwhelming other plants.
Soil Preparation: Tolerates wide range of soils from poor to fertile, making this exceptionally adaptable. Prefers moist, well-drained soil for best growth. Tolerates wide pH range from acidic to alkaline (pH 5.0-8.0). Thrives in sandy, loamy, and clay soils. Tolerates dry shade once established—one of the best ground covers for challenging dry shaded areas under trees. Also tolerates occasional waterlogging better than many ground covers. Thrives in poor soils where many plants struggle. Best growth occurs in moderately fertile, moist soil, but the adaptability to poor dry conditions makes this invaluable for difficult sites. Minimal soil preparation required—this is tough adaptable plant! If desired, incorporate organic matter to improve moisture retention, though not essential.
Container Growing: Excellent for container growing—the trailing stems create spectacular cascading displays! Use containers with excellent drainage holes (minimum 25-30cm diameter), multipurpose or soil-based compost, and position in partial shade to full shade. Water regularly during growing season—allow compost surface to dry slightly between waterings. Feed monthly during growing season (April-September) with balanced liquid fertiliser to maintain vigorous growth and bright variegation. Trim trailing stems as needed to maintain desired length and shape. Top-dress annually with fresh compost. Repot every 2-3 years in spring using fresh compost and same size or slightly larger container. Perfect for hanging baskets, window boxes, and containers where the trailing stems cascade over edges creating glowing variegated displays!
Seasonal Care: Very low maintenance—one of the easiest ground covers! No regular pruning required. Trim stems as needed to control spread or maintain desired boundaries—simply cut back with shears or secateurs to required limits. This can be done anytime during growing season. For large areas, mow or strim in early spring (March) if plants become straggly or overgrown—plants recover vigorously with fresh growth. Remove any all-green (non-variegated) shoots immediately by cutting back to base—these can be more vigorous than variegated growth and will eventually dominate if not removed. Minimal feeding required—established plants thrive without supplementary fertiliser. If desired, apply general-purpose balanced fertiliser in spring to promote vigorous growth. Water during prolonged dry spells during first 2-3 years of establishment—once established, plants are reasonably drought-tolerant, particularly in shade. Generally pest and disease free with excellent vigour and resilience. The bright variegation is reliably stunning and stable!
Propagation: Very easy to propagate! The trailing stems root naturally at nodes where they touch soil—simply lift rooted sections and transplant to new locations. Can also propagate from cuttings taken anytime during growing season—take 10-15cm stem cuttings, remove lower leaves, and insert into compost or directly into ground in shaded location. Rooting occurs within 2-4 weeks. Division is also easy—lift sections of established plants and replant. Home gardeners can propagate with complete ease—this is one of the easiest plants to propagate!
