Description
Planed Square Trellis is the elegant solution for gardeners who want structure, privacy, and plant support without compromising on aesthetics. With its smooth, splinter-free finish and clean square lattice pattern, this trellis brings a refined, contemporary look to boundaries, walls, and garden dividers.
The range of six heights – from compact 30cm panels to substantial 150cm screens – offers exceptional versatility. Use the shorter panels to top existing fences, add decorative detail to walls, or create low divisions within borders. The taller panels provide instant privacy screening, wind filtration, or dramatic vertical backdrops for climbing plants.
The planed finish is what sets this trellis apart. Unlike rough-sawn alternatives, the smooth surface is pleasant to handle, safe around children and pets, and provides a superior base for paint or stain. Leave it natural to weather to soft silver-grey, or finish it in colours that complement your planting scheme – the choice is yours.
The square trellis pattern is both functional and beautiful. It provides excellent support for climbers – roses, clematis, jasmine, and honeysuckle all thrive when trained through the framework – while the geometric design creates visual interest even before plants establish. The open lattice allows light and air to circulate, promoting healthy plant growth while maintaining a sense of openness.
At 183cm wide, the panels are substantial enough to make an impact yet manageable to install. The pressure-treated timber ensures long-term durability and rot resistance, making this a practical investment that will support your garden for years to come.
Whether you’re screening an unsightly view, creating intimate garden rooms, adding height to boundaries, or simply providing a framework for your favourite climbers, Planed Square Trellis delivers function and beauty in equal measure.
This is trellis for gardeners who appreciate clean lines, quality craftsmanship, and the transformative power of well-chosen structure.

Installing & Maintaining Your Planed Square Trellis
Installation
Choose your location carefully – trellis works beautifully as fence toppers, wall-mounted plant support, freestanding screens (with posts), or decorative garden dividers. Ensure the structure you’re fixing to is sound and capable of supporting the trellis and any mature climbing plants.
For fence topping, position the trellis centrally on the fence posts and secure using galvanised screws or nails. Pre-drill screw holes to prevent splitting. Fix at multiple points along the top and bottom rails for stability.
For wall mounting, use galvanised screws and wall plugs, ensuring fixings are appropriate for your wall type (brick, stone, or rendered). Leave a 2-5cm gap between trellis and wall using spacers or battens – this allows air circulation, prevents rot, and gives climbers room to twine behind the framework.
For freestanding screens, fix trellis panels between sturdy posts (75mm x 75mm minimum) set in concrete or driven into the ground with post spikes. Ensure posts are vertical and firmly anchored before attaching trellis.
Handle panels carefully during installation to avoid damaging the lattice. Work with a helper for taller panels – they’re manageable but easier with two people.
Finishing
The planed timber can be left untreated to weather naturally to silver-grey, or finished with paint, stain, or preservative for colour and additional protection. If finishing, do so before installation for easier application and better coverage.
Use exterior-grade wood stain, paint, or preservative suitable for pressure-treated timber. Apply two coats for best results, allowing adequate drying time between coats. Avoid painting or staining in wet or freezing conditions.
Maintenance
Inspect annually for loose fixings, damaged sections, or signs of rot. Tighten screws and replace any damaged components promptly.
If painted or stained, refresh the finish every 2-3 years to maintain appearance and protection. Clean the trellis before recoating – a stiff brush and soapy water remove dirt and algae effectively.
Trim climbing plants regularly to prevent excessive weight and maintain the trellis structure. Heavy, mature climbers can strain fixings, so prune to keep growth balanced and manageable.
Check wall-mounted trellis spacers remain intact – good air circulation is essential for longevity.
Planting with Trellis
Plant climbers 30-45cm away from the trellis base to allow root development. Train young growth onto the framework using soft ties or garden twine. Choose climbers suited to your aspect – sun-lovers like roses and clematis for south-facing positions, shade-tolerant climbers like climbing hydrangea or ivy for north-facing walls.
The square lattice supports twiners (honeysuckle, jasmine) and plants that need tying in (roses, climbing hydrangeas) equally well. For fast coverage, try annual climbers like sweet peas or morning glory while perennials establish.
