Description
Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Diable D’Or’ is a stylish deciduous shrub, grown for its colourful foliage which emerges in bright coppery colours in late spring, before turning a deeper, rich purple for the summer months. It also bears pretty pink-flushed white flowers on arching branches in early summer, followed by glossy red seed heads in autumn – both contrast beautifully with its leaves. When plants reach maturity the bark peels away in layers. It’s ideal for growing in a mixed herbaceous border and looks fantastic when grown alongside lime-green coloured plants.
For best results grow Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Diable D’Or’ in moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Avoid chalky soils. Prune regularly to encourage colourful new growth. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
