Description
Liriope muscari ‘Big Blue’ is one of those plants that earns its place twice over — first with its bold spikes of deep violet-blue flowers in late summer, then with its evergreen, strap-like foliage that holds structure through the colder months. Tough, reliable, and quietly impressive, it works equally well as a neat edging plant, a groundcover for dry shade, or a filler between shrubs. Low-fuss and long-lived, it’s the kind of plant that just gets on with it.

Planting:
Plant in spring or autumn into well-drained soil, or into a quality potting compost for containers. Space plants 30–40cm apart to allow them to fill in over time, and water well after planting to settle the roots.
Watering:
Water regularly through the first growing season. Once established, Liriope is notably drought-tolerant — one of its real strengths — though a drink during extended dry spells will keep it looking its best.
Feeding:
A light top-dressing of compost in spring is usually all it needs. In pots, a slow-release feed applied in spring will support healthy foliage and good flowering.
Seasonal Care & Tidy-Up:
In late winter or early spring, cut the foliage back to within a few centimetres of the ground before new growth emerges. It responds well to this annual tidy and comes back fresh and vigorous each season.
Division (to keep plants vigorous):
Divide established clumps every 3–4 years in spring. This refreshes the plant and gives you more to spread around the garden — it multiplies well.
Pests & Problems:
Generally trouble-free. Liriope is resistant to most pests and diseases. In very heavy, wet soils, ensure drainage is adequate to prevent root issues over winter.
Design Notes:
Excellent as a bold edging plant along paths and borders, and particularly useful for dry shade under trees where little else will grow. Pairs well with hostas, ferns, Japanese anemones, and ornamental grasses. Repeated in drifts it creates a strong, low ribbon of texture and late-season colour — and in pots it delivers year-round structure with a late-summer bonus.
