What it looks like
A dense, rounded head of leathery, glossy foliage held on a clear stem — giving that “designed” look all year round. The silvery leaf undersides add a subtle shimmer, especially on breezy days.
Flowers & wildlife
In autumn, it produces small, creamy-white flowers tucked among the leaves. They’re not showy, but they’re wonderfully scented and great for pollinators. (Some plants may also form small fruits later, depending on conditions.)
Where to use it
- In pots: Perfect for framing a front door, terrace or outdoor dining area
- In pairs: A classic, symmetrical look either side of steps or a gate
- In borders: Adds height and evergreen backbone without taking up much ground space
How to plant & care for it
- Water well while establishing; once settled it’s drought tolerant
- In containers, keep watering steady through summer and feed in spring
- Prune to shape once or twice a year (late spring and/or late summer) to keep the head tight and compact
- If planting in a windy spot, stake securely until established
