Description

Cupressus × leylandii ‘Pyramidalis’ is a naturally narrow, upright Leyland cypress with a clean, tapered shape—ideal when you want evergreen height and privacy without a plant that sprawls. It grows with a strong central leader and dense, feathery foliage, forming a neat pyramid silhouette that looks smart even before you ever lift the shears.
Used as a specimen, it brings instant structure and year-round presence. Planted in a line, it makes a fast, reliable screen—perfect for softening boundaries, sheltering a garden from wind, or creating a greener backdrop for flowering shrubs and perennials.
Like all Leylandii, it’s vigorous and resilient, but it’s also very manageable when you keep on top of light, regular clipping. The secret is simple: trim little and often, and avoid cutting back into old brown wood.

Caragh Garden Notebook

Planting:
Plant in spring or autumn. Choose a spot in sun or light shade. Dig a generous hole, loosen the soil well, and mix in compost to help establishment. Plant at the same depth as in the pot, firm in, water thoroughly, and mulch to conserve moisture (keeping mulch away from the trunk).
Soil Preparation:
Adaptable, but best in moist, well-drained soil. Improve heavy clay with compost (and a little grit if needed) to prevent winter waterlogging. In very light soils, add organic matter to help hold moisture.
Watering:
Water regularly in the first year, especially in dry spells. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant, but it will put on better growth with steady moisture in its early seasons.
Clipping & Keeping It Neat:
  • If you’re using it as a screen/hedge, clip once or twice a year (late spring and late summer).
  • For a crisp pyramid shape, light trims through the growing season keep it dense.
  • Avoid cutting back into old brown wood—Leylandii doesn’t reliably regrow from bare stems.
Pests & Problems:
Generally trouble-free. In prolonged drought, conifers can brown off—water deeply during dry spells, especially in the first year. Good airflow and sensible spacing help prevent fungal issues.
Design Notes:
A brilliant evergreen for structure, screening, and wind protection. Use it to create a calm green backdrop for roses, hydrangeas, grasses, and perennials, or plant as a single statement for year-round form.
