Description

There’s something utterly magical about stepping into a garden where Choisya ternata has made itself at home. This enchanting evergreen shrub, affectionately known as Mexican Orange Blossom, brings year-round structure and seasonal bursts of pure joy that will have you falling in love with your garden all over again.
Picture clusters of star-shaped, snow-white flowers appearing like nature’s own confetti in late spring, their sweet, orange-blossom fragrance drifting on warm breezes and drawing both gardeners and beneficial insects into its spell. But the magic doesn’t end there – this generous beauty often treats us to a second flush of blooms in autumn, extending the season of wonder well into the cooler months.
The glossy, trifoliate leaves create a backdrop of rich emerald green that remains constant throughout the seasons, providing structure and substance when other plants have retreated for winter. Run your fingers through the foliage and you’ll release a delightful citrusy scent that adds another layer to this sensory experience.
Perfect for creating informal hedging, adding backbone to mixed borders, or standing proudly as a specimen plant, Choisya ternata adapts beautifully to both contemporary and cottage garden styles. Its naturally rounded habit requires minimal pruning, making it an ideal choice for busy gardeners who want maximum impact with minimal fuss.

Caragh Garden Notebook

Planting: Choose a sheltered spot with morning sun and afternoon shade for best results, though it tolerates full sun beautifully. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth. Enrich heavy clay soils with compost or sharp sand to improve drainage.
Spacing: Allow 2-3 metres between plants for hedging, or give a single specimen plenty of room to develop its natural, graceful shape.
Aftercare: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, it’s remarkably drought-tolerant. A light prune after the main flowering flush will encourage that delightful second show of blooms.
Companion Planting: Pairs beautifully with lavender, rosemary, and other Mediterranean herbs. Plant beneath with spring bulbs like narcissus and bluebells for a succession of interest, or underplant with hardy geraniums for summer-long colour.
