Camellia Japonica Rosso

Description

If you’re looking for a shrub that brings real drama when the garden is still waking up, Camellia japonica ‘Rosso’ is it. Those deep red, velvety blooms feel almost jewel-like against glossy evergreen foliage — a proper statement from late winter into spring, and a plant that instantly makes a space feel more “designed”.
It’s beautiful in a large pot by the front door, tucked into a sheltered border, or used to add year-round structure in a partially shaded spot. And because it’s evergreen, it keeps its shape and colour long after the flowers fade.

Why you’ll love it

  • Deep red blooms for late winter to spring colour
  • Evergreen, glossy foliage for year-round structure
  • Ideal for pots, patios, entranceways and sheltered borders
  • A classic, long-lived shrub that gets better every year

Best position

Camellias are happiest in a sheltered spot with partial shade (morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal). Protect from cold, drying winds and harsh early morning sun in frosty weather.

Soil & planting tips

Plant into moist, free-draining soil that’s acid to neutral. If your garden soil is alkaline, grow in a container with ericaceous compost. Mulch annually with bark or leaf mould to keep roots cool and evenly moist.

Care notes

Water well during dry spells, especially in the first year and as buds are forming. Feed with an ericaceous fertiliser in spring. Prune lightly after flowering if you need to shape it.

Caragh Garden Notebook

For a really elegant look, pair ‘Rosso’ with soft greens and winter whites — hellebores, ferns, snowdrops, or a drift of white narcissus. The contrast makes that deep red flower colour look even richer.
