Description

There’s a reason box balls never go out of style.
A Buxus ball brings instant structure — that clean, evergreen shape that makes a garden feel calmer and more finished, whether you’re working with a grand formal layout or a small courtyard that needs a little order. They’re timeless: smart in pairs by a doorway, dotted along a path, or used to give rhythm through mixed planting.
And because they’re evergreen, they do their job quietly all year — even when everything else is taking a rest.

Where to place them
Box is wonderfully adaptable. It grows in sun or part shade, but in Ireland and the UK it appreciates a spot that isn’t blasted by cold, drying winds (especially in pots).
Soil & drainage
Box likes soil that holds some moisture but drains freely.
  • In the ground, improve very sandy soil with compost to help retain moisture.
  • In heavy soil, improve drainage with organic matter and avoid waterlogging.
Watering
  • Water well in the first season after planting.
  • In pots, water more regularly — containers dry out faster, especially in summer and windy weather.
  • Try to water the soil, not the foliage.
Feeding
A spring feed (or a top-dress with compost) helps keep growth fresh and green. If plants are in pots, a little extra feeding through the growing season can help maintain density.
Clipping (to keep that perfect sphere)
  • Clip once or twice a year to maintain a crisp outline.
  • The best time is usually late spring/early summer, with a second light tidy in late summer if needed.
  • Avoid clipping in very hot sun or during frost.
Pests & problems (important note)
Box can be affected by box blight and box tree caterpillar in some areas. Good airflow, careful watering, and regular checking help. If you’d like, I can add a short, customer-friendly line about monitoring and care.
