There are some things in a garden that simply take time.

Borders need a few seasons to fill out, hedging needs to knit together and a young tree can take years before it develops the height, shape and character you first imagined.

But not everything has to start small.

Mature trees can completely change an Irish garden from the moment they’re planted, bringing height, structure and a sense of permanence that would otherwise take many years to achieve.

It’s one of the reasons I’ve always loved them. A mature tree doesn’t just fill a space. It can make the rest of the garden suddenly make sense.

Why Choose Mature Trees for an Irish Garden?

One of the biggest advantages of planting a mature tree is, of course, instant impact.

Instead of imagining how your garden might look in ten years’ time, you’re able to see much more of that finished picture from the beginning.

But size isn’t the only reason to choose one.

A mature or specimen tree can be used to:

• Create privacy and screening
• Add height to a flat or newly landscaped garden
• Frame a view from the house
• Soften buildings, walls and boundaries
• Create shade around terraces and seating areas
• Introduce structure to large gardens
• Become a focal point in its own right

Sometimes it’s not about filling an enormous space either. One beautifully shaped specimen in exactly the right position can have far more impact than filling a garden with lots of smaller plants.

Finding a Tree With Character

Our Caragh Nursery Park was created to make choosing a mature tree a completely different experience.

Rather than looking at a photograph and trying to imagine the scale, you can actually walk amongst the trees, see their shapes and appreciate the character that makes each specimen different.

We have over 100 very large mature, specimen and shaped trees within the park, from wonderfully characterful olive trees and large Japanese Maples to topiary, bonsai forms and trees reaching 10 to 12 metres in height.

And I think seeing them in person makes all the difference.

You begin to picture one at the end of your own garden. Beside the terrace. Outside the kitchen window. Or perhaps in that awkward space you’ve never quite known what to do with.

Choosing the Right Mature Tree

The biggest tree isn’t necessarily the right tree.

Before choosing a mature tree for your garden, think first about what you’d like it to do.

If privacy is the priority, you may need something evergreen or a tree with a particular shape and canopy.

If you’re looking for a focal point, character may matter more — an interesting trunk, beautiful foliage, seasonal colour or an architectural shape.

You should also consider the practical side: available space, eventual height and spread, soil, drainage, light levels and the conditions around the planting position.

And then think about the garden itself.

A beautiful Japanese Maple can bring colour and softness to a sheltered garden. A mature olive can introduce wonderful texture and character. Shaped and architectural specimens can look particularly striking in contemporary spaces, while larger trees can bring that invaluable sense of age and permanence to a country garden.

It’s about finding your tree rather than simply choosing a tree.

Planting Mature Trees Successfully in Ireland

Planting a mature tree requires a little more preparation than planting something young, but getting those first stages right will give it the best possible start.

The planting hole needs to be prepared correctly and the tree should be planted at the appropriate depth, with consideration given to drainage, staking and support where required.

Most importantly, don’t forget the water.

Newly planted mature trees need careful watering while they establish, particularly during dry weather. Water thoroughly after planting and pay close attention during the first couple of years rather than assuming a large tree can look after itself simply because it is mature.
