Caragh Garden Notebook: Getting the Best from Your Turf

Preparation: Good ground preparation is everything. Dig over the area, remove weeds and stones, rake to a fine tilth, and firm the surface before laying. A level, well-prepared seedbed gives the roots something to get into quickly.

Laying: Lay rolls in a staggered brick-bond pattern, ensuring edges butt up tightly with no gaps. Avoid stretching the turf — work from a plank laid on top of already-laid rolls to avoid compacting the prepared soil beneath.

Watering: Water thoroughly immediately after laying and keep the turf consistently moist for the first two to three weeks while roots establish. In dry or warm weather this may mean watering daily. Don’t let it dry out — newly laid turf has no established root system to draw on and will suffer quickly without moisture.

First cut: Wait until the turf has rooted — gently lift a corner after 10–14 days to check. Once roots have taken hold, cut on a high setting for the first few times before gradually lowering to your preferred height.

Feeding: A light lawn feed four to six weeks after laying will support strong, healthy root development and keep the colour looking well through the first season.

IMPORTANT

We require a minimum of 1 full days notice to order your turf and schedule a suitable delivery or collection time slot.
E.g. If you want to lay turf on Friday, your order must be received no later than close of business on Wednesday.

Turf is a fresh, living product and must be laid as soon as possible following delivery to prevent it drying out.
We only supply fresh turf and have deliveries into our centre every day (Mon-Fri) which helps us to ensure all orders are completed using rolls that have been supplied on the same day. Please state your preferred delivery / collection date when placing your order to avoid having the turf delivered too soon. Note: Deliveries are available Monday-Friday.
