Description

Heuchera ‘Buttered Rum’ brings a warm, glowing caramel tone to pots and borders — like a little pool of amber light at ground level. The ruffled leaves shift through butterscotch and toffee shades across the seasons, and in summer it lifts delicate stems of small creamy flowers above the foliage. It’s an easy, reliable way to add colour and contrast without relying on blooms.

Caragh Garden Notebook

Planting:
Plant in spring or autumn into well-prepared soil, or pot into a quality peat-free compost with good drainage. Keep the crown (where leaves meet roots) sitting at soil level — don’t bury it too deeply. Water well to settle in.
Watering:
Water regularly in the first season and during dry spells, especially in containers. Aim for even moisture rather than extremes — heucheras dislike drying out completely, but they also won’t thank you for soggy soil.
Feeding:
A spring mulch and a light feed (or slow-release feed in pots) is usually plenty. Too much feed can push soft growth, so keep it gentle.
Seasonal Care & Tidy-Up:
Remove tired or tatty leaves as needed to keep the plant looking fresh. In late winter/early spring, tidy away older foliage to make room for the new season’s growth.
Division (to keep plants vigorous):
Every 3–4 years, lift and divide in spring or early autumn if the clump gets woody or starts to lift slightly out of the ground.
Pests & Problems:
Generally trouble-free. Watch for vine weevil in pots and occasional slug/snail nibbling on young leaves.
Design Notes:
‘Buttered Rum’ is gorgeous with deep purples, burgundy foliage, grasses, and soft pinks, and it’s especially effective repeated along a path or used to warm up the edge of paving. Lovely in mixed containers where you want a steady “golden” note from spring right through autumn.
