Description

Clematis Boulevard® ‘Nubia’ is a compact clematis with real depth—large, velvety flowers in deep red, wine and purple tones that look almost luminous against green foliage. It’s part of the Boulevard series, bred to stay smaller and flower for longer, making it ideal for patios, balconies, and smaller gardens where you still want that classic clematis impact.
Because it doesn’t race away like some climbers, it’s perfect for a pot with a small obelisk, a short trellis panel, or weaving through a shrub without taking over. And because it flowers on new growth, it’s wonderfully straightforward to prune: one hard cut-back in late winter, then it comes away fresh and flowers through summer.
It’s a brilliant “big flower, small space” plant—rich colour, long performance, and easy care.

Caragh Garden Notebook

Planting:
Plant in spring or autumn. Choose a spot in sun or part shade with a support in place (small trellis, obelisk, wires). Dig a generous hole and enrich with compost. Plant the clematis 5–8cm deeper than it sits in the pot to encourage strong shoots from the base. Water well and mulch to keep roots cool. For pots, choose a deep container with excellent drainage.
Soil Preparation:
Clematis love fertile, moisture-retentive but free-draining soil. Improve heavy soil with compost and grit; improve light soil with plenty of organic matter. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and protect the root zone.
Watering & Feeding:
Water regularly in the first year and during dry spells. Clematis in containers need consistent watering through summer. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser, then again in early summer (or use a slow-release feed) to support strong flowering.

Pruning

Late winter / early spring (Feb–March):
  • Cut all stems back to 20–30cm above soil level.
  • Make cuts just above a pair of strong buds.
  • Remove any dead or weak stems completely.
This hard prune encourages lots of fresh new shoots from the base — and that new growth is where this clematis makes its flowers.
During the season:
Tie in new growth as it climbs. Deadheading is optional (it can keep things looking tidy, but it will keep flowering regardless with good feeding and watering).
Pests & Problems:
Watch for slugs/snails on young shoots. Planting slightly deeper and keeping soil evenly moist helps reduce the risk of clematis wilt.
Design Notes:
Perfect for pots, small obelisks, patio containers, and compact trellis panels. The deep colour looks stunning with pale pinks, whites, silvery foliage, and fresh green planting. Gorgeous near seating where you can enjoy the colour up close.
