Why you’ll love it
Stipa tenuissima is movement, light and softness — the kind of grass that makes a garden feel alive. Even the smallest breeze sets it shimmering, and in late summer it takes on a warm, golden haze that looks incredible in low evening sun.
It’s a dream for naturalistic planting: weave it through perennials, pair it with lavender and salvias for a Mediterranean feel, or use it to soften paving and gravel. In pots, it’s an instant “finished” look — airy, elegant, and never heavy.
Caragh Garden Notebook (our growing tips)
Stipa is happiest in sun and free-draining soil. If your ground is heavy, improve drainage with grit and avoid planting where water sits in winter — that’s the main cause of trouble.
In early spring, simply comb through the clump with gloved hands (or give it a gentle tidy) to remove old foliage and let fresh growth come through. It doesn’t need rich feeding — in fact, it often looks best in leaner soil where it stays neat and graceful.
