Description

Photinia × fraseri ‘Louise’ in pom pom form is a truly eye-catching topiary, perfect for adding a splash of colour and a sense of fun to contemporary and classic gardens alike. Each pom pom is a carefully clipped globe of narrow, variegated leaves—creamy-white edged, splashed with green, and lit by vivid pink-red new growth. The result is a living sculpture that brings structure, movement, and year-round interest to patios, entrances, borders, and containers.
The pom pom form works beautifully as a single statement or in pairs to frame a doorway or path. Louise’s naturally colourful foliage ensures that even the most formal shapes feel fresh and lively, with new pink growth adding drama through the spring and summer. Hardy, adaptable, and rewarding, this topiary is ideal for both low-maintenance and design-led gardens.

Planting:
Space pom pom specimens 1–1.5m apart for a formal avenue or use singly/pairs as features. Plant container-grown specimens in spring (March–May) or early autumn (September–October). Choose a sunny, sheltered position for the brightest leaf colour and best growth, but Louise will tolerate some shade. Dig a generous hole, loosen the soil well, and incorporate compost or well-rotted manure to support establishment. Plant at the same depth as in the pot, firm in gently, water thoroughly, and mulch.
Soil Preparation:
Prefers moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soil but is adaptable to clay and chalk. Avoid waterlogged ground. Improve heavy soils with compost and grit to aid drainage. Mulch annually to feed the soil and conserve moisture.
Pom Pom Care & Pruning:
Trim regularly through the growing season to maintain the rounded shape and encourage fresh, colourful growth. Remove reverted (plain green) shoots promptly to preserve the variegation. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy foliage and vibrant colour.
Container Growing:
Excellent in large pots. Use a free-draining compost and ensure containers have plenty of drainage holes. Water regularly in summer, but avoid waterlogging in winter.
Pests & Problems:
Generally trouble-free. Occasionally watch for leaf spot or aphids, particularly on young shoots. Good airflow and regular monitoring help prevent issues.
Design Notes:
Ideal as a statement plant for patios, entrances, or formal borders. Use singly, in pairs, or as part of a topiary collection. The vivid pink and cream foliage pairs beautifully with other evergreens and flowering perennials.
