Installation: Position pond wall on the short or long edge of your pond depending on desired effect—short side creates dramatic focal point, long side creates extended water curtain. Ensure pond edge is level and structurally sound to support the wall (corten steel is substantial). Follow manufacturer’s instructions for secure fixed mounting—the wall must be firmly attached to prevent movement or tipping. Connect the included VP3 pump according to instructions, positioning pump in pond at appropriate depth. Ensure electrical connections are made by qualified electrician using outdoor-rated waterproof connections and RCD protection. Test water flow and adjust pump settings to achieve desired waterfall or fountain effect. The letterbox waterfall creates smooth sheet, while three-spout fountain creates individual streams—choose based on your aesthetic preference. Position away from overhanging trees where falling leaves could clog pump. Ideal for contemporary gardens, modern water features, and urban outdoor spaces.
Material Care: Corten steel develops natural protective rust patina over 3-6 months when exposed to weather—this is normal and desirable. The patina starts as bright orange rust and gradually deepens to rich orange-brown, eventually stabilising. During the initial weathering period, rust runoff may occur—protect surrounding paving, decking, or pale materials by applying sealant or allowing runoff to wash away naturally. Once fully weathered (6+ months), runoff stops. The rust layer is the protective coating—do NOT attempt to remove it or paint over it. To accelerate patina development, apply rust accelerator product. To seal the patina and prevent any runoff, apply corten steel varnish once fully weathered—this is optional but recommended for installations near pale paving. Clean periodically with water to remove algae or debris—avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. The self-protecting rust layer means the wall becomes MORE durable over time, not less.
Pump & Water System Care: CRITICAL: The VP3 pump requires regular maintenance for reliable operation. Clean pump filter weekly during active use to prevent clogging from debris, algae, or leaves. Remove pump from pond monthly and rinse thoroughly. Descale pump every 3-6 months using pond-safe descaler product to remove mineral buildup—hard water areas require more frequent descaling. Check water level regularly—pump must remain fully submerged to operate correctly and prevent damage. Top up pond as needed, especially during hot weather when evaporation is high. In areas with very hard water, consider using rainwater or filtered water to reduce mineral buildup on the waterfall surface. Clean the waterfall surface periodically to remove algae or mineral deposits using pond cleaner product. Ensure pump is positioned on stable base (not directly on pond liner which could be damaged).
Winter Care: In regions with hard frosts, winter care is essential to prevent damage. OPTION 1 (Recommended): Remove pump from pond before first hard frost, clean thoroughly, and store indoors in frost-free location until spring. Drain water from pump to prevent ice damage. Leave pond wall in place—corten steel is fully frost-proof. OPTION 2: If pump remains in pond, ensure it is positioned below ice level and run periodically (even briefly) to prevent freezing—consult pump manufacturer’s winter operation guidelines. Never allow pump to freeze solid as this causes irreparable damage. Pond heaters or de-icers can keep small area ice-free if continuous winter operation is desired. Clean pond wall in early spring before restarting system. The corten steel wall itself requires no winter protection—the weathered patina is unaffected by frost, ice, or snow.
Troubleshooting: If water flow is weak or stops: check pump filter for clogs, ensure pump is fully submerged, descale pump if mineral buildup is present, check electrical connections. If waterfall flow is uneven: ensure pond wall is perfectly level, clean waterfall edge to remove debris or algae, adjust pump flow rate. If rust runoff occurs after initial weathering period: apply corten steel varnish to seal patina. If algae grows on wall: clean with pond-safe algae remover and improve water circulation. Generally very low maintenance once weathered and system is established.
