Description
Irish-grown evergreen structure, years in the making
For the last six years, Quercus ilex and other evergreen oaks have been in extremely short supply due to restrictions on imports from the continent. At Caragh Nurseries, we made the decision to grow our own here in our fields in Caragh — and now, at last, the first of these Irish-grown trees are ready.
This is a special release for us. These beautiful Quercus ilex standard trees have been carefully grown here at home, with all the strength, character, and year-round structure this much-loved evergreen is known for. Supply will still be limited, making these early trees something quite special for gardens looking for lasting form and presence.
Evergreen structure with timeless character
If you’re looking for a tree that brings year-round presence, strength, and quiet elegance to a garden, Quercus ilex, also known as Holm Oak, is a beautiful choice. Trained as a standard, it offers a clear stem with a rounded head of evergreen foliage, creating instant structure and a wonderfully architectural feel.
With its leathery, deep green leaves and naturally dense habit, Quercus ilex is ideal for adding formality, screening, or a Mediterranean touch to Irish gardens. It feels both grounded and graceful — a tree that looks as though it has always belonged.
Why choose Quercus ilex standard trees?
- Irish-grown in Caragh
- Evergreen interest all year round
- Strong architectural shape
- Excellent for formal gardens and entranceways
- Tolerant of coastal conditions and wind once established
- A great option for adding height without taking up too much ground space
- Works beautifully in both classic and contemporary garden designs
- Rare availability after years of limited supply
Best for
Quercus ilex standard trees are especially suited to:
- Framing doorways, gates, and driveways
- Creating symmetry in formal planting schemes
- Adding height to courtyards and smaller gardens
- Bringing evergreen structure to mixed borders
- Mediterranean-inspired or low-maintenance garden designs
Position and care
Holm Oak thrives in a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-drained soil. It is a tough, reliable evergreen once settled in, coping well with wind, coastal exposure, and periods of dryness better than many other broadleaf trees.
Water well during the establishment period, especially in dry spells. Light trimming can help maintain a neat, rounded shape if desired, though many gardeners love its naturally full and characterful form.
Why we love it
There’s something wonderfully dependable about Quercus ilex. It brings weight, calm, and permanence to a space — the kind of tree that anchors a garden and makes everything around it feel more considered. For us, these trees carry an extra layer of meaning too: they represent patience, resilience, and years of growing for the future here in Caragh.
Caragh’s Garden Notebook
If you want a garden to feel structured even in the depths of winter, evergreen standards are a brilliant place to start. Quercus ilex is especially useful where you want a tree to hold its shape and presence through every season, whether placed in pairs for balance or used as a single focal point.
Please note: these trees are Irish-grown here in Caragh and availability is limited.
