RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026: A Show at a Crossroads

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show has always been more than a flower show. For a few days every May, RHS Chelsea Flower Show becomes a snapshot of where gardening, and perhaps society itself, is heading.

This year’s show delivered plenty to admire and Ian, Ella and I were lucky enough to attend on Wednesday. There was much to admire in the The King’s Foundation gardens, which brought a sense of reflection and storytelling. The launch of the The Sir David Beckham Rose from David Austin Roses, unveiled alongside David Beckham himself, drew inevitable crowds. And of course Sarah Eberle once again proved why she remains one of Chelsea’s most respected designers.

The Biggest Talking Points of Chelsea 2026

But beyond the medals and planting palettes, this year’s Chelsea also hinted that the show is at something of a crossroads.

Only weeks before opening, headline sponsor The Newt in Somerset stepped away, with Range Rover stepping in. Commercially, it makes perfect sense. Yet for a show so closely tied to sustainability and environmental responsibility, partnering with a luxury car brand inevitably raises questions, even if electric models are now part of the picture.

Interestingly, The Newt’s departure also comes as it launches its own Great Garden Show, free to RHS members. In many ways, it feels like a natural next step for a brand so heavily rooted in horticulture and experience-led events, though some may wonder whether Chelsea is beginning to face competition from the very businesses it once helped elevate.

The End of Project Giving Back

Then there is the end of Project Giving Back, which funded more than 60 gardens since 2022 and helped bring many charitable and purpose-led spaces to Chelsea that may never otherwise have existed. Its departure leaves a noticeable gap, both financially and creatively.

AI Gardens and Sustainability Questions

This year also saw the arrival of AI-designed gardens. As we all know, technology is now part of every industry, and gardening will be no exception. But AI itself comes with growing environmental concerns around energy use and sustainability, which is another slightly uncomfortable contradiction for a show built around climate awareness and green living.

Even the lifting of Chelsea’s long-standing garden gnome ban somehow feels symbolic. Perhaps the show is becoming a little less rigid, a little more open to changing tastes and modern culture.

Has Chelsea Flower Show Become Too Elitist?

And perhaps that leads to another question Chelsea increasingly faces: has it become too elitist? Ticket prices, food & drink, luxury sponsors and international attention undoubtedly help keep the show at the pinnacle of horticulture, but they can also create distance from everyday gardeners. At times, Chelsea can feel less like a flower show for the nation and more like a global lifestyle event for those fortunate enough to attend. Myself and Ian grabbed a glass of Pimm’s and were shocked to see it was £16 a glass.

Yet maybe that international appeal is also part of its magic. Hundreds of visitors still fly in from all corners of the world every year, all drawn by the same thing — the creativity, beauty and prestige that Chelsea continues to represent.

Why Chelsea Still Matters

None of this takes away from the brilliance of Chelsea. The gardens remain extraordinary and the craftsmanship is world-class. And perhaps that is the real challenge for the future: how does Chelsea continue to balance tradition, sustainability, accessibility and modern relevance, while still remaining the most famous flower show on earth. One thing is for certain: Chelsea isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
