The Compost We Use Ourselves (Now in a 50L Bag)

There’s a moment in every growing season when you’re reminded that plants don’t fail first — foundations do.
At Caragh Nurseries in Co. Kildare, we spend our days growing trees, shrubs and plants for gardens across Ireland and the UK. And if there’s one lesson we’ve learned the practical way (in the field, in the glasshouse, and through plenty of testing), it’s this: great plants start with great soil.
That’s why we’re delighted to introduce Caragh Nurseries Multi-Purpose Compost (50L) — the compost we’ve refined and relied on in our own nursery, now available for your garden too.

Why we created our own compost

Over the years  we’ve trialled countless mixes. Some were fine for a week or two, but didn’t hold up through real Irish weather. Others looked good on paper but didn’t deliver consistent root growth. So we did what growers do: we tested, adjusted, and kept refining until we found a blend that gave us reliable results across a wide range of plants.
This isn’t compost we’ve put our name on — it’s compost we’ve put our plants in.

What makes it different

Our Multi-Purpose Compost is designed to support:
  • Strong, healthy roots
  • Reliable moisture management
  • Balanced nutrition for steady growth
It contains a carefully balanced fertiliser blend with essential nutrients including Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium, plus key micro-nutrients such as Magnesium, Calcium, Manganese, Iron and Zinc.
We’ve also included Humic and Fulvic Acids to support nutrient availability and root development, and the pH is adjusted to optimise nutrient uptake for a wide range of plants.

Moisture matters (and we’ve built for it)

If compost dries out unevenly, plants struggle — especially in pots and containers.
That’s why we’ve incorporated:
  • A wetting agent during manufacture to encourage even moisture throughout the growing media
  • A polymer-based water-retaining granule to help hold moisture at the root zone
  • Natural Irish seaweed extract to support healthy, resilient growth

What it’s made from (and what it’s not)

This is a premium, Irish-produced compost made using 100% screened and blended Irish sphagnum peat, sourced from responsibly managed peatlands in Ireland.
And importantly: no green waste or wood fibre fillers.

How to use it

This compost is ideal for:
  • Pots and containers
  • Hanging baskets
  • Beds and borders
  • General planting around the garden
Not suitable for ericaceous (lime-hating) plants (We have another option for those) . Water regularly and don’t allow compost to dry out completely.
