January, The Month of Dreaming, Planning, and Laying Foundations

January in the garden is less about frantic doing and more about thoughtful planning. As the earth rests, it’s the perfect time to nurture your ideas, dream up new spaces, and set strong foundations—whether you’re tending to veg beds, prepping glasshouses, or plotting the next phase of your outdoor haven.

Plants & Planting – Setting the Scene for a Flourishing Year

Whether you’re eyeing our mature trees, dreaming of summer salads from your own veg beds, or coaxing herbs and seedlings in the glasshouse, now’s the time to plan for the coming year, so lets

  • Review what thrived (or didn’t) last year
  • Plan crop rotation for healthy veg beds
  • Clean and prep your glasshouse for spring sowing
  • Mulch and tidy borders, prune dormant trees
  • Dream big—think about new varieties, shapes, and colours

Top tip: Healthy soil is the heart of every garden. Add compost, leaf mould, or well-rotted manure to boost next season’s growth and maybe try the no-dig method to see if it works for you, it definitely has for me.

Fencing & Timber: Boundaries That Last

We’re excited to announce our new fencing range, launching later this week! A sturdy fence or well-loved shed is not just practical—it frames your garden, keeps pets safe, and lends privacy. To keep timber looking its best:

  • Check for winter damage—loose panels, signs of rot, or algae
  • Clean with a gentle brush and soapy water
  • Treat with eco-friendly wood preservative
  • Oil hinges and locks on sheds and gates

Solid boundaries create a sense of sanctuary and structure—perfect for any garden, big or small.

Stone for Terraces: Dream, Design, Prepare

While our new stone collections are just a couple of weeks away, now’s the moment to plan! Whether you’re envisioning a Mediterranean terrace or a winding path, consider:

  • How you use your space—dining, lounging, play?
  • Drainage and levels for easy maintenance
  • Cleaning existing stone: sweep, power wash, or use gentle stone cleaner, we have an inside track via our friends at S2C of all the very best methods and products, natural or chemical to use to keep your stone clean and sealed perfectly and we’ll keep sharing those with you but do ask too.
  • Sketching out ideas or mood boards

A well-planned terrace is the heart of summer gatherings and peaceful evenings.

Planning Your Garden: Key Pointers & Pain Points

  • List what worked and what you’d change
  • Consider privacy, sunlight, and shelter
  • Think about year-round colour and structure
  • Don’t forget storage, composting, and wildlife habitats
