La Flora

La Flora translated from Italian is Garden Life and that pretty much encompasses everything we do here, we love spending quality time in our gardens from our weekly workout of pulling the few weeds, sweeping paths, raking driveways and mowing the lawn to the nicer bits of spending time in the garden; enjoying the fruits of your labour with friends or just a good book and a glass of something lovely.  The plants we grow here are just a small part of what we do but we couldn’t do it without the production and growers we have around us making everything look just amazing and giving us the quality of plants that we can rely on.

Our own production team on the nursery headed up by Sean, Andrii and Holly propagate and grow a wide array of our trees and plants throughout our 60+ acre production nursery, there are fields full of rows of wonderful deciduous trees in all the sizes from very young that we won’t be selling for 3-4 years or more right through to the semi-mature trees and there are less in the rows as the sizes get bigger.  We have four full fields of hedging, that way we are able to sell you smaller sizes of 40-60cm plants that are strong and healthy but will still need a little patience right up to the instantly full and mature sizes of 2metres and more.

Over more recent years we have also been adding to that a good number of evergreen trees, mainly standard trees with a 6ft stem and round or cylindrical shaped heads and then full shaped trees, some cylindrical, some cones and some columns.  These shaped trees are not a quick option, they really are a labour of love with time and expertise in abundance put into them but they really are worth it to have our own production of these very popular trees coming out of our fields each year.  We don’t sell these rootballed (or bare-root) but instead pot them straight away to ensure that they get the very best outcome when they reach your gardens.

However there are trees and plants that we don’t grow here, sometimes because we aren’t able to get the growth we need in our climate so they need a headstart in sunnier climes and our chosen climate is Italy for most of these.  Why Italy ? Firstly its because we have a super relationship with our partner nursery in Tuscany, one that we would really describe as friends now we work that closely.  We travel out to the nursery in Pistoia regularly to ensure we have everything we need, when we need it and can ensure the quality and quantity that we need is always available.  We also use the Italian stocks to supplement when we start to run out of trees and plants as we know we can trust them to send exactly what you want to see.   Japanese Maples are a good example of this, its something we grow ourselves well but each year we cannot keep up with the demand for new stocks and larger, more mature options in the colour ranges so these are reserved and ready for us to call on when we need them.  Espaliered trees are another example, we always have good stocks but we supplement these with Italian plants to ensure we have the numbers you want when you want them.  Our acreage simply isn’t enough to grow the quantity you want and when we travel to Italy we check that the processes and sizes that we want will always be available.

Italy is not the only location we use,  most of our Olive trees and some of our palms and tropicals come from our partner in Spain as they specialise in the production of these mature beauties.

We have a new partner that we have just started working with something really special in a completely different country where we are using the expertise as craftsmanship of master horticulturists and specialists and I can’t wait to share that news and stock with you very soon.

So what is it that makes these relationships work, well like any relationships they take work and communication. Making sure that we give in equal amounts as we take and never compromise on quality for price.

Next time I will let you inside the world of our ceramists and potteries and the specialists that design and make our pot supplies, how and where they are made and some of the things we look for when we go on the hunt for something new and exciting.
