Description
If you have always loved Wisteria but thought your garden was too small, too shaded, or too young to wait ‘Amethyst Falls’ was grown for you. This beautiful American Wisteria is everything the classic varieties offer in terms of flower, fragrance, and romance, but in a more restrained, manageable form that flowers earlier, performs in less-than-perfect conditions, and — most importantly — does not require years of patient waiting before it puts on a show.
In late spring, and often again through summer, ‘Amethyst Falls’ produces a generous succession of softly fragrant, blue-violet racemes that drape and tumble from the stems with an easy, relaxed grace. It is less theatrical than its larger Japanese and Chinese cousins — but in a smaller garden, on a modest arch, around a doorway, or in a large container on a sunny terrace, it is absolutely perfect. The scale feels right, the habit feels right, and the flowers are as lovely as anything in the Wisteria family.
A Wisteria for every garden, every space, and every level of patience.

Caragh Garden Notebook
‘Amethyst Falls’ is a Wisteria fulgida selection — an American species that behaves rather differently to the more familiar Chinese and Japanese forms. It is less vigorous, less demanding, and considerably more forgiving, making it an outstanding choice for smaller spaces and for gardeners who want reliable flowers without years of establishment first.
The repeat flowering through summer is one of its most valued qualities — where Chinese and Japanese Wisterias give you one magnificent spring display and then retire for the year, ‘Amethyst Falls’ keeps producing fresh flushes of bloom through the warmer months, extending the season of interest significantly. The stems twine clockwise and are happy to weave through trellis, wire, or an open fence structure without the aggressive vigour that can make larger Wisterias challenging in confined spaces.
In a large container with a sturdy obelisk or frame, ‘Amethyst Falls’ makes a genuinely spectacular patio plant — one that brings all the beauty and romance of Wisteria to a terrace, courtyard, or balcony where the larger forms would simply be unmanageable.
Caragh tip — the one that matters: ‘Amethyst Falls’ is far more forgiving than Chinese or Japanese Wisteria, but it still benefits from the same twice-yearly pruning approach — cutting back new shoots in summer and again in winter to encourage flowering spurs close to the main framework. With this variety the results come faster and the pruning feels less critical, but the discipline still pays dividends in a fuller, more floriferous plant year on year.
