Why you’ll love it

If you want instant holiday atmosphere, Phoenix canariensis does it in one plant. Those big, feathered fronds bring drama and movement, turning a patio into a little sun-trap sanctuary — even when the sky is doing its usual Irish thing.
It’s a true statement piece: strong silhouette, evergreen presence, and a sense of “destination garden” the moment you place it. Brilliant in a large pot by a front door, beside a seating area, or anchoring a Mediterranean-style border with gravel, agaves and drought-tolerant planting.

Caragh Garden Notebook (our growing tips)

This palm loves sun, warmth and drainage. Plant (or pot) it where it gets as much light as possible, and make sure excess water can drain away freely — winter wet is the main enemy.
In containers, use a large pot with drainage holes and a gritty, free-draining compost mix. Water regularly through spring and summer, and feed during the growing season for the best colour and vigour. As temperatures drop, reduce watering and keep it on the drier side.
In colder spells, give it a bit of help: move pots into a sheltered corner and consider wrapping the crown (the growing point) with fleece if frost is forecast.
