Description
Osmunda regalis is a truly majestic fern — soft, airy and elegant, with a presence that feels almost prehistoric in the best way. Its fresh green fronds unfurl in spring and rise into a tall, graceful clump that brings height and movement to damp borders, woodland gardens and pond edges.
Unlike many ferns, Royal Fern has a lighter, more feathery texture, so it pairs beautifully with hostas, astilbes, rodgersias and moisture-loving perennials. Given the right conditions, it becomes a long-lived, statement plant that only improves with age.
Why you’ll love it
- Tall, elegant fern with a soft, feathery look
- Perfect for damp soil and naturalistic planting

- Adds height and calm without feeling heavy
Position & care
- Position: Partial shade (sun is fine if the soil stays moist)

- Hardiness: Very hardy
- Watering: Don’t let it dry out — consistent moisture is key
Notes
Osmunda regalis is deciduous, so it dies back in winter and re-emerges in spring. A mulch of compost or leaf mould helps keep the roots cool and moist.
