Description
If you’re looking for a tree that earns its space, Liquidambar ‘Worplesdon’ is hard to beat — especially for autumn colour. Through spring and summer it carries fresh green, star-shaped leaves, building a lovely, full canopy. Then in autumn it turns into a proper show: glowing shades of yellow, orange, crimson and deep red, often all on the same tree.
In multi-stem form, it has a more natural, architectural shape, with multiple trunks creating instant structure and a softer outline — ideal as a feature tree in a lawn, at the edge of a garden room, or as part of a bigger planting scheme where you want height and seasonal drama.
Why you’ll love it
- Outstanding autumn colour (yellow, orange, red, burgundy)
- Distinctive star-shaped foliage
- Multi-stem structure for year-round shape and presence
- A beautiful feature tree for lawns and larger borders
- Hardy and reliable once established
Position & care
- Position: Full sun to light shade (best colour in sun)
- Soil: Moist but well-drained soil; prefers slightly acidic to neutral
- Hardiness: Very hardy
- Watering: Water well in the first year and during dry spells
Notes
Liquidambar can be slower to settle in very chalky or dry soils. If your soil is alkaline, adding organic matter and mulching annually will help it thrive.
