Description

Named for the remote mountain county of Pingwu in Sichuan — deep in the heart of Giant Panda territory — Fargesia ‘Pingwu’ carries something of that wild, unspoiled landscape with it wherever it grows. It is one of the tallest and most upright of the clump-forming bamboos, sending strong, elegant canes skyward before they arch gracefully at the tips, creating a silhouette that is at once bold and beautifully restrained.

The canes emerge with a subtle reddish-purple flush in youth, maturing to a clean olive-green, while the narrow, lance-shaped leaves hold their fresh colour throughout the year. It is a bamboo of genuine presence — one that transforms a boundary, a courtyard, or a large planting scheme with quiet authority.

Planting: Plant in spring or autumn in a well-prepared, moisture-retentive soil enriched with plenty of compost. Pingwu is more tolerant of open, sunny positions than many bamboos, though a site with some shelter from strong prevailing winds will help it establish quickly and maintain its elegant, upright form. Allow adequate space — this is a bamboo that will mature into a genuinely impressive plant.

Watering: Water thoroughly and consistently through the first growing season. Once established, Fargesia ‘Pingwu’ is among the more drought-tolerant Fargesias, though regular moisture during dry periods will reward you with stronger, more vigorous cane production each spring.

Feeding: A balanced slow-release fertiliser applied in early spring encourages the robust new cane growth that defines this variety. Top-dress with well-rotted compost or leaf mould annually to maintain soil structure and moisture retention.

Pruning & Care: Minimal intervention needed. Remove old, faded, or damaged canes at the base in late spring once new growth is underway — this keeps the clump well-ventilated and draws the eye to the freshest, strongest canes. As the plant matures, selective thinning every two to three years will maintain an open, graceful structure.

Design Notes: Fargesia ‘Pingwu’ is the bamboo of choice where height and presence are required without sacrificing elegance. Its tall, arching form creates an outstanding natural screen or windbreak — softening boundaries with a lushness that fencing simply cannot replicate.
