Description
Calluna vulgaris ‘Julia’ is a neatly compact pink-flowering heather with a soft, cheerful presence that makes it an easy plant to place and a lovely one to live with. From August through to November, the mound of fresh green foliage is covered in pink flower spikes that bring a gentle brightness to the late-season garden. It is a heather that feels generous without being loud — the kind of colour that blends beautifully with the rest of the planting while still earning its own place.

Like all the best heathers, ‘Julia’ is at its strongest in numbers. In a drift it makes a soft, unified carpet of pink that reads beautifully in autumn light, and in a mixed heather collection it provides the warm pink note that sits comfortably between the whites, rubies, and deeper purples. Easy, tidy, and dependable, it is exactly the sort of plant that quietly earns its keep all year.

Planting:
Plant in spring or early autumn into acidic, moist, well-drained soil with ericaceous compost. Full sun gives the richest flower colour and the most compact, healthy habit — ‘Julia’ performs best in a bright, open position. Plant at the same depth as the pot, firm in gently around the roots, and water in thoroughly. For a heather garden or ground-cover planting, space at around 35–45cm to allow the mounds to knit naturally over two to three seasons. The 1.5 litre size gives a more established start and fills in a little sooner than a 1 litre plant.

Watering:
Water consistently through the first growing season while the plant establishes. Once settled, ‘Julia’ manages well with natural rainfall in well-drained, acidic soil and requires little supplementary watering in an Irish garden. In containers, water regularly and never allow the compost to dry out completely. Collected rainwater is preferable to alkaline tap water for the long-term health of all ericaceous plants.

Feeding:
Feed with an ericaceous fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and a generous pink flower display. An annual topdress of ericaceous compost around the base maintains the acidic conditions the plant needs. Avoid general-purpose or lime-rich fertilisers, which cause yellowing foliage and gradual decline in heathers.

Pruning:
Clip lightly with shears after flowering — in late autumn or early spring — removing the spent flower spikes and approximately a third of the previous season’s growth. This keeps the plant compact and prevents it from becoming woody and bare at the base over time. Light, regular trimming from the start is always the right approach; never cut back into old, bare wood.

Pests & Problems:
Entirely trouble-free in the right conditions. Yellowing foliage is almost always a sign of incorrect soil pH — too alkaline — and is addressed with ericaceous compost, ericaceous feeding, and rainwater watering. Good drainage is equally essential. Otherwise, ‘Julia’ is as self-sufficient and dependable as any heather in the collection.
