Description
Bark mulch is one of those products that does more than it looks like it should. Spread it across your borders and beds and it gets to work immediately — locking moisture into the soil, suppressing weeds before they get a chance to establish, and insulating plant roots against frost damage through the colder months.
This mini chip version is sourced from sustainably managed forests and breaks down gradually over time, improving soil structure and feeding the ground as it does. It’s low-effort, high-impact, and it makes any garden look instantly tidier. If you’ve ever walked into a freshly mulched garden, you’ll know the smell — that’s the sign of a garden that’s being looked after properly.
Apply in spring to get ahead of the growing season, or in autumn to protect roots heading into winter. Either way, your garden will thank you for it.
Caragh Garden Notebook
A layer of 50–75mm is enough to do the job properly. Too thin and weeds will push through; too deep and you risk smothering the base of plants. Keep mulch a few centimetres clear of stems and tree trunks to prevent rot, and top up each season to maintain the depth. Mini chip breaks down faster than large chip, so it feeds your soil more readily — ideal if you’re looking to improve soil health alongside keeping things tidy.
