• Weed first, then mulch. Mulch is brilliant at preventing weeds, but it won’t magically fix an already weedy bed — give the area a quick clean before you spread.
• Depth matters. Aim for a generous layer (around 5–7cm) for best weed suppression and moisture retention.
• Keep it off stems. Leave a small gap around the base of plants and tree trunks to avoid trapping moisture against bark.
• Water it in. If the soil is dry, water first — mulch helps hold moisture, but it can’t add it.
• Top up annually. A light refresh each year keeps beds looking sharp and keeps the soil underneath in great condition.
