Description
Fine Bark Mulch is a simple way to make a garden look smart and to keep it healthier. The small, even pieces of natural bark spread easily and settle into a neat, rich brown layer that shows off plants beautifully, whether it’s a freshly planted border, a rose bed or the base of a favourite shrub.

Beneath the surface it works hard. A layer of mulch holds moisture in the soil through dry spells, keeps roots cooler in summer and cosier in winter, and blocks light from weed seedlings, so there’s less weeding for you. As it slowly breaks down, it feeds the soil and encourages worms and other helpful life.

Neat, natural and quietly hardworking, it’s the finishing touch every bed deserves.

Preparing the Ground:
Clear any weeds and water the soil well before you mulch, as mulch locks in the moisture that’s already there. Spring, once the soil has warmed, and autumn are the best times to apply it.

Applying:
Spread an even layer 5-7cm deep over the soil. Keep the mulch a few centimetres back from the stems of plants and the trunks of trees and shrubs, as piling it against the bark can encourage rot.

Watering:
Water well before and after spreading. Once the mulch is down, the soil underneath stays moist for much longer, so you’ll find you need to water less often in dry weather.

Feeding:
Bark mulch improves the soil gradually as it breaks down, but it isn’t a fertiliser. Apply your usual spring feed first, then mulch over the top. Bark can draw a little nitrogen from the soil surface as it rots, so hungry plants like vegetables benefit from an extra feed.

Seasonal Care & Top-Up:
Rake the surface over occasionally to freshen it up, and top up with a thin layer each spring or autumn as the bark breaks down. Remove any weeds that do get through while they’re small, and they’ll pull out easily.

Design Notes:
The fine grade gives a smooth, tidy finish that suits formal borders, containers and beds around roses, shrubs and perennials. Its natural brown makes a lovely backdrop for green foliage and colourful flowers. Use it around newly planted trees and hedging to help them settle in, and on paths in informal areas.

Storage:
Keep unopened bags dry and out of direct sun. Once open, use within a few weeks, or keep the bag closed to stop it drying out.
