Description
Calluna vulgaris ‘Bonita’ is a warm, full-hearted heather — double pink flowers carried in generous spikes from August through to November, with the richness and body that only a double-flowered variety can bring. The name suits the plant entirely: there is a generosity and warmth to ‘Bonita’ that makes it one of the most appealing of the late-season heathers, and the deep pink double flowers glow in the low autumn light with a richness that single-flowered varieties cannot quite match.

Like its fellow double-flowered companion ‘Mary Rose’, the double form means the flowers hold their colour and their shape on the plant longer through the season — an extended display that keeps the border warm and full of interest deep into autumn and on towards November. The compact mound of fresh mid-green foliage holds its quality year-round, providing a clean, tidy presence even when out of flower.

Planting:
Plant in spring or early autumn into acidic, moist, well-drained soil with ericaceous compost. Full sun gives the richest double pink colour and the most compact, healthy habit — ‘Bonita’ is at her most vibrant and generous in a bright, open position where the warmth of the flowers can be fully appreciated. Plant at the same depth as the pot, firm in gently around the roots, and water in thoroughly. For a heather garden or ground-cover planting, space at around 40–45cm to allow the mounds to develop and fill naturally.

Watering:
Water consistently through the first growing season while the plant establishes. Once settled, ‘Bonita’ manages well with natural rainfall in well-drained, acidic soil and requires little supplementary watering in an Irish garden. In containers, water regularly and never allow the compost to dry out completely. Collected rainwater is always preferable to alkaline tap water for the long-term health of all ericaceous plants.

Feeding:
Feed with an ericaceous fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and the fullest, most generous double flower production. An annual topdress of ericaceous compost around the base maintains the acidic conditions the plant needs. Avoid general-purpose or lime-rich fertilisers, which cause yellowing foliage and decline in all heathers.

Pruning:
Clip lightly with shears after flowering — in late autumn or early spring — removing the spent flower spikes and approximately a third of the previous season’s growth. Because the double flowers of ‘Bonita’ hold their form and colour longer than single-flowered varieties, the trim can be timed slightly later to enjoy the full extended display. Light, consistent annual trimming from the start keeps the plant compact and well-presented; never cut back into old, bare wood.

Pests & Problems:
Entirely trouble-free in the right conditions. As with all heathers, yellowing foliage is almost always a sign of incorrect soil pH — too alkaline — addressed with ericaceous compost, ericaceous feeding, and rainwater watering. Good drainage is equally essential. ‘Bonita’ is as self-sufficient and dependable as any heather in the collection once settled in the right conditions.

The warm double pink of ‘Bonita’ makes her one of the richest and most generous-looking of the ling heathers — fuller and warmer than single-flowered pink varieties, and holding her colour beautifully through the longer season her double flowers provide.
