For the last six years, beautiful evergreen oaks like Quercus ilex have been in incredibly short supply. With imports from the continent restricted, these much-loved trees became harder and harder to find.

At Caragh Nurseries, we could have simply accepted that. But these are the kinds of trees we believe are worth waiting for.
So we made a decision: if we couldn’t rely on supply coming in, we would begin growing our own here in Caragh. A long-term promise to the gardens we love
Growing trees like these is never a quick project. It asks for patience, space, care, and a real belief in the future. We dedicated part of our fields to growing evergreen oaks that would one day become the kind of mature, characterful specimens people struggle to find.
These are not impulse plants. They are trees for gardens that want structure, permanence, and year-round beauty. Trees that bring calm, depth, and a sense that a garden has truly settled into itself. That is exactly why we felt they were worth growing.

Why Quercus ilex is so special
Quercus ilex, or Holm Oak, is one of those rare trees that manages to feel both strong and elegant. Evergreen through every season, it brings shape and presence even in the depths of winter.
Its deep green foliage, architectural form, and resilience make it a wonderful choice for Irish gardens. It works beautifully in formal settings, Mediterranean-inspired spaces, and larger natural gardens where you want something lasting and quietly dramatic.
Alongside our standard trees, we have also been growing larger multi-stem forms — real statement pieces with all the movement and maturity that make a garden feel instantly established.
Years of care, now ready at last
There is something very special about seeing the first batches finally ready. These trees have been grown here in our own fields in Caragh, shaped by Irish weather, cared for season after season, and nurtured with the kind of attention that only comes from growing something yourself.
For us, this is more than a product release. It is the result of years of planning, patience, and passion.
Rare, Irish-grown, and still limited. What makes these trees even more special is that supply is still limited. Even though the first batches are now ready, they remain a rare treat.
For anyone who has been searching for mature evergreen oaks, this is a lovely moment. These are Irish-grown trees, grown here in Caragh, and they represent something we are deeply proud of.
A tree with presence for years to come
Whether you are drawn to the neat structure of a standard form or the sculptural beauty of a larger multi-stem, Quercus ilex is a tree that gives back year after year.
It anchors a space. It softens modern lines. It adds weight and calm to a planting scheme. And because it is evergreen, it keeps doing that even when everything else has fallen quiet for winter.
